Our mission
Falls are the leading cause of injury for adults over 65, and most of them happen in the home. The good news is that the highest-impact safety upgrades — grab bars, raised toilet seats, non-slip mats, proper lighting — cost under $200 total and can be installed in an afternoon. The bad news is that finding honest, specific advice on which products to buy is harder than it should be.
We started Safe Steps Home to bridge that gap. Every product we recommend has been researched against published senior safety standards (CDC fall prevention guidelines, ADA grab bar specifications, FDA bed rail safety guidance) and cross-referenced with real-world reviews from caregivers and occupational therapists.
How we test products
For every guide on this site, we follow a consistent process:
- Define the safety standard. What does the relevant authority (CDC, ADA, FDA, or occupational therapy literature) say is required for this product to be safe?
- Research available products. We start with Amazon's top 50 in the relevant category and supplement with picks from medical equipment retailers like SpinLife and AmeriGlide.
- Filter against the standard. Anything that doesn't meet the published safety standard is removed, regardless of price or popularity.
- Cross-check reviews. We look for patterns across hundreds of real user reviews, weighted toward verified purchases from senior users or caregivers.
- Rank by use case. Different users have different needs — we identify the best product for the most common scenarios rather than picking a single "winner."
How we make money
Safe Steps Home is supported by affiliate commissions. When you buy a product through a link on our site, the retailer pays us a small commission — there's no additional cost to you. We never accept payment for product placement, and we don't include any product in our guides simply because it pays a higher commission.
We are participants in the Amazon Services LLC Associates Program, an affiliate advertising program designed to provide a means for sites to earn advertising fees by advertising and linking to Amazon.com.
What we are not
We are not doctors, occupational therapists, or medical equipment specialists. The information on this site is for educational purposes only. Before making major changes to a senior's home environment, especially for users with significant mobility issues or cognitive impairment, please consult a licensed occupational therapist or your loved one's primary care physician.
