Grab Bars: The Right Way to Install Them
A properly installed grab bar prevents more falls than any other single home modification. An improperly installed one is more dangerous than no bar at all.
The bathroom is the most fall-prone room in the house, and the grab bar is the cheapest, most effective intervention available. Three of them, professionally installed, will run $400–$700 and reduce fall risk by an estimated 40–60% in older adults with mobility concerns.
Most people install them wrong.
The three placements that matter
1. Beside the toilet (vertical or angled)
The hardest transition in the bathroom: standing up from a seated position. A vertical or 45-degree angled bar on the wall beside the toilet, 18–28" from the floor, gives leverage during the up-and-down.
2. Inside the shower (horizontal + vertical)
One horizontal bar at 33–36" off the floor for stability while standing. One vertical bar at the entrance for the step-in. Never install only a horizontal bar at the entrance — it encourages a sideways grip that can cause falls during a step-up.
3. Beside the tub (angled)
A 45-degree bar mounted on the wall beside the tub at the foot end. Anchored into the studs, this is the bar that gets the most use.
Stud anchoring is non-negotiable
A grab bar must be screwed into wall studs or into a wall blocking specifically installed for the purpose. Drywall anchors will not hold. A grab bar that pulls out under load is more dangerous than no bar — the user falls anyway, only now with a chunk of drywall in their hand.
If your studs don't line up with where you need the bar, two solutions:
- Wing-It Anchors by Solid Mount — engineered for grab bars, rated 250+ lbs in drywall.
- Wood blocking behind the drywall, installed during a remodel. The right answer if walls are open.

- Beside toilet: 33–36" off the floor
- Inside shower (horizontal): 33–36"
- Beside tub (angled bar): 33–36" at the high end, 9–12" above the rim at the low end
These are starting points. The actual height should be customized to the person — measure from a comfortable standing position with the elbow slightly bent.
One bar in the right place beats three bars in the wrong places. Don't fill the bathroom with hardware. Place each one with intention.
